barrier to entry
A barrier to entry is whatever makes it hard for a competitor to copy you, and a business without one is a business waiting to be copied.
In plain English
You open a shop. It works. Within a year there are four more selling the same thing on the same street, and everybody's margin has collapsed.
That is what happens when there is no barrier to entry, and it is the story of an enormous number of Nigerian businesses.
A barrier to entry is whatever stops somebody else doing what you do. It might be capital, if the equipment is expensive. A licence, which not everybody can obtain. A brand people trust and will pay more for. A distribution network built over years. A skill that is genuinely rare. Contracts, relationships, or simply scale that lets you sell cheaper than a newcomer can survive on.
If your business has none of these, then every naira of profit you make is an advertisement inviting competitors, and they will come.
This is why so many Nigerians work extremely hard in businesses that never quite pay. The idea worked. The idea was also copyable by anybody with a little money and a week.
Before you commit years to something, ask what stops the next person. And if the honest answer is nothing, then either build a barrier deliberately or accept that you are entering a race to the bottom.
You are the first to sell a product locally and margins are excellent. Within eighteen months there are five competitors, nobody has any advantage, and everybody is competing on price. The idea worked perfectly and protected nothing.
Questions people ask
Can a small business have a barrier to entry?
Yes. Reputation, relationships, location, service quality and specialist skill are all genuine barriers, and none of them requires capital.
What is the weakest barrier?
Being cheapest, unless your costs are structurally lower than everybody's. Otherwise it is not a strategy, it is a countdown.
How do I build one?
Deliberately. A brand people trust, a network nobody else has, a skill that is genuinely difficult, or scale. Each takes years, which is exactly what makes them barriers.
