bootstrapping

Bootstrapping is building a business with your own money and your own sales, without taking investment from anybody else.

Bootstrapping is how almost every Nigerian business actually starts, and how almost nobody wants to be seen starting.

It means funding the thing yourself. Your savings, your salary, and then, as quickly as possible, the money customers pay you. No investors, no board, no pitch decks, and nobody to answer to.

It is harder and it is slower. You cannot buy growth. You cannot hire ahead of revenue. Every mistake comes out of your own pocket, and there is nobody to blame or to rescue you.

But the discipline it forces is genuinely valuable. A bootstrapped business must find a customer willing to pay almost immediately, which means it finds out within months whether anybody actually wants what it sells. Funded businesses can spend three years and a great deal of somebody else's money learning the same thing.

And you keep all of it. Every naira of profit, every decision, and every share. Which is why the founder who bootstrapped to profitability and then raised money, if they ever needed to, negotiates from a completely different position to the one who raised money to find out whether they had a business at all.

You start with ₦400,000 of savings, sell to your first ten customers, and reinvest every naira of profit. Three years later the business earns ₦2 million a month and you own 100 percent of it. No investor owns a single share.

Questions people ask

Is bootstrapping better than raising money?

For most businesses, yes. Investment suits businesses that must grow enormously and quickly. Most businesses simply need customers, and customers are cheaper than investors.

How do I bootstrap with no savings?

Start with something you can sell before you build it, take deposits, keep your job while you begin, and keep costs brutally low until customers are paying.

When should I raise money instead?

When the opportunity is genuinely large, the window is closing, and capital is the only thing standing between you and it. Rarely as early as founders wish.
