cheque clearing
Cheque clearing is the process banks use to move money from the cheque writer's account to the cheque holder's account before the funds are confirmed final.
In plain English
Remember when your uncle handed you a cheque after selling his land, and your mother told you not to spend a kobo of it until it had cleared? You did not understand why the bank kept saying the money was there but not really there yet, and it felt like she was collecting dust for weeks while everyone waited.
That waiting is cheque clearing. When someone writes you a cheque, the piece of paper is really a promise, an instruction to their bank to pay you a certain amount. Before your bank hands over real, spendable money, it has to check with the other bank that the funds actually exist and that the cheque is not fake or bouncing.
In Nigeria, this used to take days, sometimes up to two weeks for cheques from a different bank or a different city, because the physical cheque had to travel or the details had to be verified manually. The Nigeria Interbank Settlement System changed a lot of this by allowing cheques to be scanned and cleared electronically, so a cheque deposited in Lagos from an account in Kano can clear in a day or two rather than a fortnight.
Think about a landlord in London who receives a cheque from a tenant. The bank will often place a hold on those funds, sometimes up to six working days, until the cheque clears, even though the balance shows on the tenant's online statement almost immediately.
For someone abroad sending a cheque home to pay a relative's hospital bill, this gap matters. The relative might see the deposit reflected in their account but still cannot withdraw it, and that frustrating delay is simply the clearing house doing its due diligence so nobody loses money to a cheque that was never good in the first place.
Aunty Nkechi deposits a ₦500,000 cheque from a client on Monday. Her bank shows the deposit immediately, but the money remains unavailable for withdrawal until the paying bank confirms and settles it, usually two to three business days later through the clearing system.
Questions people ask
Why does my bank say the cheque has been deposited but I still cannot withdraw the money?
The deposit shows in your balance as a courtesy, but the bank has not yet received confirmation from the paying bank that the funds are genuine and available, so it holds the amount until clearing is complete.
How long does cheque clearing take in Nigeria?
With the electronic clearing system, most cheques between banks clear within one to three business days, though older or unusual cheques may take longer if extra checks are needed.
Can a cheque still bounce after it appears to have cleared?
It is rare but possible if fraud or an error is discovered later, which is why some banks are cautious with large or unfamiliar cheques even after the standard clearing period.
