collection agency
Collection Agency: a company that gets paid to chase people who owe money that the original lender has given up collecting itself.
In plain English
"Ah ah, who is this calling my phone by 7am?" "Madam, we are calling from Trustline Recoveries regarding an outstanding balance on your Zenith credit facility." "But that is not even Zenith's number." "No madam, Zenith sold the debt to us. You now owe us."
That conversation happens every day in Lagos, London, and everywhere in between, and it points to something a lot of people do not realise until it happens to them. When you borrow money and stop paying, the bank does not chase you forever. After a certain point, banks and lenders often hand the debt over to a collection agency, or sell it outright for a fraction of what you owe, because chasing individual debtors is not their main business.
A collection agency's whole job is recovery. They call, they send letters, they sometimes involve lawyers, and in some countries they can report the debt to credit bureaus, which follows you around when you try to get a loan, a phone contract, or even a flat to rent. In Nigeria, this might look like a recovery agent from a microfinance bank or a fintech lending app calling your listed guarantor because you have gone silent. In the United Kingdom, it might be a letter from a firm like Lowell or PRA Group about an old credit card balance you thought was forgotten.
The important thing to know is that a collection agency is not automatically the same as the original lender, and their information about your account is not always perfect. People have been chased for debts that were already paid, debts past the legal limit for recovery, or debts that belonged to someone else entirely. That is why it always pays to ask for proof before you send a single naira or pound.
For someone abroad sending money home, this matters too. If a relative in Nigeria took a loan against your name as guarantor and stopped paying, a collection agency may eventually find its way to you, wherever you are.
Tunde borrowed ₦300,000 from a lending app and missed three repayments. The app sold the debt to a collection agency for ₦180,000. The agency now calls Tunde directly, aiming to recover the full ₦300,000 plus fees, and every naira above what they paid is their profit.
Questions people ask
Can a collection agency take me to court?
Yes, some collection agencies do take debtors to court, or pass the case to a lawyer, especially for larger unpaid balances. This is more common once other recovery attempts have failed.
Do I have to pay a collection agency immediately if they call me?
No, you do not have to pay on the spot. It is reasonable to ask for written proof of the debt, the original lender, and how the amount was calculated before making any payment.
Can a collection agency affect my credit score?
In places with active credit bureau systems, yes, an unpaid debt reported by a collection agency can lower your credit score and make future borrowing harder or more expensive.
