corporate banking

Corporate Banking is the arm of a bank that serves companies, not individuals, handling their loans, accounts, payroll and trade deals at a bigger scale.

Here is the surprising part. The businessman who walks into a bank branch to open a personal savings account often gets a warmer smile than the company sending ₦500 million through the same bank that same afternoon. Yet it is that second customer, the company, that calmly keeps many banks alive.

Corporate Banking is the side of a bank built to serve businesses rather than individuals. Instead of someone asking for a car loan or a savings account, you have a company asking for ₦2 billion to build a warehouse, or needing help paying two thousand staff salaries every month, or wanting a letter of credit so it can import machinery from China.

A Nigerian example makes this clear. Dangote Cement does not walk into a branch and queue for a teller. It has a dedicated corporate banking team at its bank, people whose whole job is to manage the company's accounts, arrange loans for new plants, and structure trade finance for importing equipment.

In the United Kingdom, a supermarket chain like Tesco works with corporate bankers to manage cash from hundreds of stores, arrange bonds, and handle currency risk when it buys goods from suppliers abroad. Same idea, different economy.

There is a diaspora angle too. A Nigerian running a logistics company in London that exports goods to Lagos will likely deal with corporate banking on both ends, one bank managing the UK side, a correspondent relationship handling the Nigerian side, so money and goods can move smoothly across borders.

Corporate banking is less about one person's payday and more about the plumbing that keeps whole businesses running, invisible until something breaks.

A Nigerian manufacturing company needs ₦800 million to buy new equipment. Its corporate banking relationship manager arranges a term loan, sets up the repayment schedule over five years, and handles the letter of credit so the equipment can be imported from Germany without the seller worrying about being paid.

Questions people ask

Is corporate banking the same as business banking for small shops?

Not quite. Business banking usually serves small and medium businesses, while corporate banking serves large companies with bigger, more complex needs like bond issues, trade finance and multi million naira loans.

Can an individual use corporate banking services?

No, corporate banking is built for registered companies, not individuals, though the owner of a company might also have personal accounts at the same bank handled separately.

Why do big companies need a whole banking team instead of just a normal account?

Because their needs are bigger and messier, payroll for thousands of staff, loans for expansion, foreign currency deals and trade finance, all of which need specialist handling rather than a regular branch queue.
