credit score

A credit score is a number that tells lenders how likely you are to pay back money you borrow.

Somewhere, quietly, a record is being kept of how you handle money you did not have.

Every loan you repay on time, every one you miss, every card balance you leave hanging, builds a history. Credit bureaux in Nigeria collect it and turn it into a score, and lenders read that score before they read anything you write on a form.

A strong score means you are offered money at a fair price. A weak one means you are offered money at a punishing price, or not at all, which is one of the cruellest arrangements in finance. The people who most need affordable credit are charged the most for it.

Building it is unglamorous and entirely within your control. Pay on time, every time, even the small amounts. Do not use every naira of credit available to you. Keep old accounts open rather than closing them, because a long history is worth something. And check your report, because errors are common and nobody will find them for you.

Your score is not a judgement of your character. It is a record of your consistency, which is a far more useful thing.

Two people apply for the same ₦2 million loan. One has always repaid on time and is offered 22 percent. The other has missed several payments and is offered 35 percent, if at all. Over three years that difference costs more than most people save in a year.

Questions people ask

How do I check my credit score in Nigeria?

Through a licensed credit bureau such as CRC, FirstCentral or CreditRegistry. You are entitled to see your own report, and it is worth doing once a year.

How long do missed payments stay on my record?

For years, though their weight fades with time and consistent repayment afterwards. The damage is real but it is not permanent.

Does having no credit history hurt me?

It can. A lender with no record of you has no reason to trust you, which is why a small, well repaid loan early on can be worth more than it costs.
