customer acquisition cost

Customer Acquisition Cost is what a business spends, on average, to win one new paying customer, once you add up all the marketing and sales money involved.

Every Lagos business owner has had this moment. You boost a post on Instagram, spend ₦20,000, and three people buy your product. You feel like a genius until you sit down and actually do the maths on what each of those three customers really cost you, and the smile fades a little.

That maths has a name. Customer Acquisition Cost, or CAC, is simply the total money you spend on marketing and sales, divided by the number of new customers that spending brought in. It is not a fancy formula built for big corporations alone. It is something every market woman with a WhatsApp Business account is doing in her head without calling it that.

Say a small skincare brand in Abuja spends ₦150,000 in a month on Instagram ads, influencer shoutouts, and a small commission paid to a sales girl who takes orders on the phone. That month, the brand gains 30 new customers. Divide ₦150,000 by 30, and the Customer Acquisition Cost is ₦5,000 per customer. Now the real question becomes obvious. If each customer only spends ₦4,500 on their first order, the brand is losing money on every new person it brings in, no matter how good the sales numbers look.

This is why CAC matters more than likes and comments. A UK based Nigerian selling jollof spice mixes online might spend heavily on Facebook ads to reach the diaspora market, and get plenty of orders, yet still be calmly running at a loss if the acquisition cost is higher than what a customer spends before they stop buying. The vanity metric is attention. The honest metric is CAC compared to what that customer is worth over time.

Smart founders track CAC alongside customer lifetime value, because a business can survive a high CAC if customers stay loyal and spend again and again. What no business survives for long is spending ₦5,000 to win a customer who only ever buys once for ₦3,000.

A Lagos owned online bookstore spends ₦300,000 in a month on ads and a paid affiliate programme, and this brings in 60 new customers. ₦300,000 divided by 60 gives a Customer Acquisition Cost of ₦5,000 per customer, a number the owner now compares against what each customer typically spends over their first year buying books.

Questions people ask

What counts as spending when calculating Customer Acquisition Cost?

Include everything spent to get new customers in a given period, such as ad spend, sales commissions, agency fees, and even the cost of tools or software used purely for marketing and selling.

Is a high Customer Acquisition Cost always a bad sign?

Not always. A high CAC can make sense if customers stay for years and spend repeatedly, since the total value they bring can far outweigh what it cost to win them in the first place.

How can a small Nigerian business lower its Customer Acquisition Cost?

Word of mouth, referrals, repeat customers, and building a loyal community all reduce reliance on paid adverts, which tends to bring the average cost of winning each new customer down over time.
