disposable income

Disposable income is what remains after tax, and discretionary income is what remains after your essentials, which is the number that actually matters.

Two words get used interchangeably and they mean very different things, and the difference decides how you should plan.

Disposable income is what you have left after tax. It is your take home pay, and it is the money that actually exists.

Discretionary income is what remains after the essentials as well. Rent, food, transport, school fees, the things that do not negotiate. What survives all of that is genuinely yours to decide about.

That second number is the one that matters, and almost nobody calculates it.

It is where your savings come from, because you cannot invest money that rent has already claimed. It is the true measure of your freedom, because a person earning ₦2 million with ₦50,000 of discretionary income has less room than a person earning ₦400,000 with ₦120,000. And it is where lifestyle inflation does its damage, quietly consuming every rise the moment it arrives.

Work it out honestly. Take home pay, minus everything that genuinely must be paid. The number that remains is the only part of your income that is actually under your control.

Everything you will ever build comes out of that number, and nothing else.

You take home ₦700,000. Essentials consume ₦560,000. Your discretionary income is ₦140,000, and that ₦140,000 is the entire raw material of everything you will ever build. The other ₦560,000 was spoken for before it arrived.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between disposable and discretionary income?

Disposable is what remains after tax. Discretionary is what remains after tax and essentials. The second is the number that decides your future.

How do I increase discretionary income?

Raise income, reduce essentials, or both. Reducing a large fixed cost such as rent frequently moves the number more than any amount of small economising.

Should I budget on disposable or discretionary?

Know both. Budget on disposable, and watch discretionary, because that is where your savings and your freedom actually come from.
