driver

Driver is the main force pushing your business forward, the reason sales rise or customers keep coming back.

Think of the okada rider weaving through Lagos traffic. He is not moving because the road is empty, he is moving because his legs are pedalling, his engine is running, something is pushing him forward even when the road fights back. That push is what we mean by a driver in business.

A driver is the real reason your numbers move. It could be word of mouth from happy customers, a new product that solves a problem people did not know they had, or a change in the market that suddenly makes what you sell more needed. Every business has two or three of these forces doing the actual work, even when the owner is busy chasing twenty other things.

Say you run a small provisions store in Ibadan. Your drivers might be the new estate built nearby bringing fresh families, and the fact that you deliver on credit to regulars who pay at month end. Those two things, not your logo or your Instagram page, are what keep the shelves moving.

In the United Kingdom, a small coffee cart near a train station might find its main driver is simply the eight o'clock rush of commuters who want caffeine before the platform. Once the owner sees that clearly, she stops wasting money on evening opening hours and puts her energy where the real push is.

Knowing your drivers means you stop guessing. You look at your own numbers honestly and ask, what actually made this month better than last month. Once you name it, you can feed it, protect it, and build around it instead of hoping good luck repeats itself.
