examinable period
Examinable period is the stretch of time a bank's books cover when regulators like the CBN come in to check that everything reported is true and correct.
In plain English
Every landlord in Nigeria has that season when they go through the year's rent receipts, the light bill, the security levy contributions, just to be sure nothing was missed or misquoted before a new tenant moves in or an old one disputes a figure.
Banks live that same feeling permanently, except the person doing the checking is not a landlord but the Central Bank of Nigeria, and the checking is not a once in a while thing but a scheduled, serious event called an examination.
The examinable period is simply the window of time that examination covers. It could be the last twelve months, it could be from the last examination date to now, and it tells the bank exactly which records, transactions, loans, and accounts will be pulled out and studied.
Say a mid sized bank in Lagos is told its examinable period is January to December of the previous year. Every loan given out in that stretch, every deposit taken, every suspicious transaction report filed, all of it becomes fair game for the examiners sent by the CBN or the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.
For the ordinary customer, this is why sometimes your bank suddenly asks you to update your KYC documents or explain an old transaction. It is and not since they suspect you personally. It is often because that transaction falls inside a period under examination, and the bank must show its workings.
In the United Kingdom, the Financial Conduct Authority does something similar with periodic reviews, checking a bank's conduct and records over a defined stretch, which is why banks everywhere keep such tidy, dated paper trails.
The CBN notifies a Lagos bank that its examinable period is 1 January to 31 December 2023. During the exercise, examiners review a ₦45,000,000 corporate loan disbursed in March 2023 to confirm it followed proper credit approval steps.
Questions people ask
Who decides the examinable period for a bank?
The regulator carrying out the exercise, usually the Central Bank of Nigeria or the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, sets the exact dates the examination will cover, often based on how long it has been since the last review.
Does an examinable period affect ordinary customers directly?
Not usually in a way you would notice, but if your transaction falls within that window, the bank may ask you for extra documents or clarification, simply because your record is part of what is being checked.
Is an examinable period the same as an audit?
They are cousins, not twins. An audit is often done by an independent firm the bank hires, while an examination during an examinable period is done by a regulator with legal power to demand access and impose corrections.
