fidelity
Fidelity, in investing, means the exact and honest carrying out of a duty someone else has trusted you with, especially with their money.
In plain English
Ngozi manages a cooperative purse for eleven market women in Onitsha, and every Friday she collects contributions, writes them in a school notebook, and pays out to whoever's turn it is that month.
One Friday a member offered her ten thousand naira to skip the queue and pay her out early, out of turn, calmly, with nobody the wiser. Ngozi refused, and not since she didn't need the money herself, but because the whole arrangement only works if the person holding the funds does exactly what she promised, nothing more and nothing less. That refusal is fidelity in its purest form.
In investing, fidelity describes the same standard applied to fund managers, brokers, and financial advisers. When you hand your money to someone else to invest, whether it is a pension fund manager in Lagos handling your retirement savings or an investment platform in the United Kingdom managing money for a Nigerian sending funds home to build a portfolio, that person owes you fidelity. They must act in your interest, follow the mandate you agreed, and never calmly bend the rules for their own gain.
This is why regulators like Nigeria's SEC and the UK's FCA require fidelity bonds or insurance for certain fund handlers. A fidelity bond is a kind of insurance that pays you back if the person managing your money turns out to be dishonest, whether through theft, fraud, or simply ignoring what you agreed. It exists because trust alone is not always enough, so the system builds in a backup.
The word also shows up plainly in company names, like Fidelity Bank in Nigeria or Fidelity Investments in the United States, both choosing a name that promises faithfulness to the customer's money as their whole reason for existing.
You give a fund manager ₦5,000,000 to invest in government bonds only. Fidelity means they invest it in bonds as agreed, not in a risky stock tip from their cousin, even if that tip looks tempting.
Questions people ask
Is fidelity the same thing as a fidelity bond?
Not quite. Fidelity is the honest behaviour itself. A fidelity bond is the insurance policy that protects you if someone fails to show that honest behaviour and steals or mismanages funds.
Why do fund managers need fidelity insurance if I already trust them?
Trust is a good start, but regulators and clients both prefer a safety net. If something goes wrong, the fidelity bond pays out rather than leaving you to chase a person who may have vanished with your money.
Can an individual adviser lack fidelity even if their fund performs well?
Yes. Fidelity is about following your instructions and acting in your interest, more than about returns. An adviser can post good numbers while calmly breaking the terms you agreed, and that is still a failure of fidelity.
