foreign income

Foreign income is money you earn from outside the country you live in, and it is taxable far more often than people assume.

The Nigerian developer earning dollars from an American client. The Nigerian in Manchester collecting rent from a flat in Lekki. The trader with a supplier margin in Dubai. All of them have foreign income, and a great many of them have never declared it.

The general principle in most countries, including Nigeria, is that if you are tax resident there, your worldwide income is in scope. Not merely the money that arrives in a local bank account. The money you earned, wherever it landed.

People assume that if the dollars never touched a Nigerian account, or if the client is abroad, or if a foreign country already took something, then nothing is owed. Those assumptions are wrong often enough to be dangerous.

What genuinely helps is a double taxation agreement, which can give you credit for tax already paid elsewhere so you are not charged twice. What does not help is silence, and information now moves between tax authorities in ways it did not a decade ago.

So keep records of every foreign payment from the first one. Set aside a portion as it arrives. And get proper advice once, because remote work and diaspora earnings have made this ordinary rather than exotic, and the authorities have noticed.

You earn $3,000 a month remotely from a foreign employer while living in Lagos, paid into a foreign account. You are tax resident in Nigeria. The money never touched a Nigerian bank and it is very likely still within scope.

Questions people ask

Is foreign income taxable in Nigeria?

If you are tax resident in Nigeria, your worldwide income is generally within scope. Get advice on your specific position rather than assuming.

What if I already paid tax abroad?

A double taxation agreement may give you credit for it. That is relief from paying twice, not usually an exemption from declaring.

Does it count if the money never entered Nigeria?

Where the money landed is generally not the deciding factor. Where you are tax resident and where the income arose usually are.
