fund of funds
Fund of Funds is an investment fund that does not buy shares or bonds directly, but instead buys a basket of other funds to spread your money even wider.
In plain English
Think of the way a Nigerian mother packing food for a wedding does not cook every dish herself. She calls the woman who makes the best jollof, the man whose moin moin never fails, and the aunty with the perfect small chops, then arranges all their trays into one grand spread. She is not the cook. She is the coordinator who picked the best cooks and put them together on one table.
A fund of funds works the same way. Instead of a fund manager buying individual company shares directly, they buy several other funds, each one already managed by a specialist in a particular area, and blend them into one single fund that you can invest in.
Say a Nigerian investor in Lagos wants exposure to Nigerian equities, global technology stocks, and government bonds, but does not want the stress of picking three separate funds and monitoring each one. A fund of funds does that blending for them, holding units in an equity fund, a bond fund, and maybe a money market fund, all wrapped into one product.
In the United Kingdom, this structure is common in pension schemes, where a single fund might calmly hold ten or fifteen underlying funds so that an ordinary saver gets broad diversification without needing a finance degree.
The tradeoff is cost. You are often paying fees at two levels, the fee for the underlying funds and the fee for the fund of funds manager who selected them, so returns can be trimmed more than a single fund would trim them.
For someone abroad sending money home to invest, a fund of funds can feel like a shortcut to diversification, one purchase standing in for a whole portfolio, though it is worth checking exactly what is inside before assuming it fits your goals.
A Nigerian investor puts ₦2,000,000 into a fund of funds that holds four underlying funds, an equity fund, a bond fund, a money market fund, and a real estate fund, each getting a slice of that ₦2,000,000 according to the fund's chosen mix, so one investment calmly becomes four.
Questions people ask
Is a fund of funds safer than a normal fund?
Not automatically. It spreads risk across several funds rather than one, which can smooth out bumps, but it is only as good as the underlying funds chosen, and the extra layer of fees can calmly eat into your returns over time.
Why would I pay two sets of fees instead of just picking funds myself?
Because picking, monitoring, and rebalancing several funds takes time, knowledge, and discipline that many people simply do not have. You are paying for that research and management, the same way you would pay a good event planner instead of coordinating a wedding alone.
Can I find fund of funds options in Nigeria?
Yes, some Nigerian asset managers offer multi asset or fund of funds products, often blending local equity, fixed income, and money market funds, so it is worth asking your fund manager directly whether such a product exists and what it holds.
