inside sales

Inside Sales means selling to customers by phone, email or video call from an office or your home, rather than visiting them in person.

"So you're a sales rep now? Which states do you cover?" "None. I don't travel at all. I sell to clients in Lagos, Abuja and London from my laptop in Yaba." "Ehn? How does that work?"

That is inside sales in one conversation. It is the version of selling that happens through a screen and a phone line, not the version where a rep drives round Lagos with a car boot full of samples or flies out to visit a client's office. The person doing inside sales still has targets, still has a boss checking numbers, still has to convince someone to buy. The only thing missing is the aeroplane ticket or the fuel money.

A Nigerian example makes it clearer. A software company in Lagos hires someone to call small business owners across Nigeria, walk them through the product on a video call, and close the deal without ever meeting them face to face. That person is in inside sales. Compare that to the colleague who flies to Port Harcourt to meet a big oil and gas client for a dinner and a handshake before signing a contract. That colleague is in field sales, sometimes called outside sales.

In the United Kingdom, this setup runs entire industries now. Software companies in London hire graduates straight out of university to sit at a desk, work the phones, and hit monthly quotas, all without leaving the building. It is often the starting point for a career that later moves into managing bigger accounts or leading a sales team.

There is a diaspora version worth knowing too. Nigerians abroad sometimes get hired remotely by companies for inside sales roles that pay in dollars or pounds, calling and emailing customers across time zones from a laptop in London or Lagos. The job title sounds the same everywhere, but the currency on the paycheck can be very different.

An inside sales rep in Lagos earns a base salary of ₦180,000 a month plus commission. In a month where she closes ₦2,000,000 worth of software subscriptions at a 5% commission rate, she takes home an extra ₦100,000, bringing her total pay to ₦280,000, all without leaving her desk.

Questions people ask

Is inside sales the same as telemarketing?

Not quite. Telemarketing is usually a single cold call trying to sell something quickly, while inside sales often involves building a relationship over several calls, emails and demos before a client actually buys.

Does inside sales pay less than field sales?

Not necessarily. Many inside sales roles pay a solid base salary plus commission, and because there is no travel cost involved, some companies pass on more of that saved money as commission to the rep.

Can I do inside sales fully remote from Nigeria for a foreign company?

Yes, this is increasingly common. Some Nigerians work inside sales roles for companies based in the United Kingdom or United States, calling and emailing international clients while earning in dollars or pounds.
