investment portfolio

Investment Portfolio is the full basket of everything you have put your money into, stocks, bonds, property, savings, all counted together as one consider.

Everybody who has ever mixed contributions to their thrift group with a bit of shares on a trading app and a small plot of land in the village has already built one of these without knowing the fancy name for it.

An investment portfolio is simply the collection of everything you own that is meant to grow or protect your money over time. Not one asset standing alone, but the whole gathering of them, looked at together.

Take a Nigerian civil servant in Abuja who has ₦500,000 in a money market fund, some shares in a bank on the stock exchange, and a small commercial property she rents out in Lokoja. Those three things together, viewed as a whole, are her portfolio. She does not judge her wealth by the property alone or the shares alone, she looks at the mix.

A Nigerian nurse working in Manchester might have a workplace pension, an ISA holding some index funds, and money she sends home that her brother uses to buy shares on the Nigerian exchange on her behalf. That too is a portfolio, stretched across two countries but still one consider.

The reason people build portfolios rather than putting everything into one thing is simple. If one part struggles, another part might hold steady or even grow, so the whole basket does not collapse just because one item in it had a bad year.

Nobody asks you to have a portfolio worth millions before you can use the word. Even ₦50,000 spread between a savings plan and one share purchase is a portfolio in training.

Chidi has ₦300,000 in a fixed deposit, ₦150,000 in shares of two companies on the Nigerian Exchange, and ₦100,000 in a mutual fund. Add it up and his investment portfolio is worth ₦550,000, made up of three different kinds of assets, not one.

Questions people ask

Do I need many different investments before I can call it a portfolio?

No. Even two different assets held together count as a portfolio. The word simply describes the collection, not a minimum size or a minimum number of items.

Is cash in my savings account part of my investment portfolio?

Everyday spending money usually is not counted, but money kept in savings specifically to grow, such as fixed deposits or money market funds, is often included as part of the mix.

How do I know if my portfolio is balanced well?

A well balanced portfolio usually spreads money across different types of assets so that a loss in one area does not sink the whole basket. Many people check this with a financial adviser rather than guessing alone.
