krone
Krone is the name shared by the currencies of Denmark, Norway and Iceland, each worth different amounts despite the same name and even similar symbols.
In plain English
You know how there are three families on the street with the same surname, but they are not related at all, and one of them is far richer than the other two? That is the krone for you.
Denmark has the Danish krone, Norway has the Norwegian krone, and Iceland has the Icelandic krona. They all mean the same thing in Old Norse, roughly crown, and they all trace back to a time when Scandinavian countries shared a monetary union. That union broke up over a century ago, but everybody kept the family name out of habit.
Here is where it gets interesting for anyone dealing with money across borders. If a Nigerian software developer signs a contract with a company in Oslo and gets paid in Norwegian krone, that is a completely different currency, with a completely different value, from the Danish krone a cousin in Copenhagen might be earning. Mix them up on a money transfer form and you could end up sending far less than you meant to, or your bank could reject the transaction entirely for using the wrong currency code.
This matters more than it sounds. In 2024, one Norwegian krone was worth roughly ₦157, while one Danish krone was worth closer to ₦1,000, because Denmark's krone is pegged to the euro and trades much higher. Same name, wildly different weight in your pocket.
So the lesson is simple. Never assume a currency name tells you the full story. Always check the three letter currency code, NOK for Norway, DKK for Denmark, ISK for Iceland, before you send or receive a single kobo's worth of krone.
A Lagos based freelancer invoices a Danish client 5,000 DKK for design work. At roughly ₦1,000 per krone, that lands at about ₦5,000,000 before fees, but if the client mistakenly sends 5,000 NOK instead, thinking krone is krone, the freelancer receives closer to ₦785,000, a shortfall that could cause real confusion if nobody checks the currency code first.
