liquid asset

Liquid Asset is money or something you can quickly turn into money at close to its full value, without long delay or a painful discount on the price.

Here is the surprising part. That plot of land in Lekki that cost your uncle ₦30 million might be worth even more today, and yet it is one of the least liquid things he owns.

That sounds backwards until you sit with it. Value and liquidity are two different questions. One asks how much something is worth. The other asks how fast you can turn it into cash in your hand, without begging, without discounting, without waiting months for the right buyer to show up.

Land, a generator, jewellery, even shares in a small family business, all of these can be genuinely valuable and still be stubborn to sell quickly at a fair price. That is what makes them illiquid, not worthless, just slow and sometimes costly to convert.

Cash in your hand is liquid. Money sitting in your current account is liquid. A treasury bill that matures next week is nearly as liquid as cash. But that same money tied up in a plot of land, or locked into a friend's business as an informal loan, cannot rescue you when your child's school fees are due on Monday morning.

This matters most in an emergency, and Nigerians know emergencies well. A sudden hospital bill, a job loss, a relative in the diaspora who suddenly needs ₦200,000 sent home for a burial, these moments do not wait for you to find a buyer for your land in Ibadan.

The wise move is never to have all your money in one form. Keep enough liquid assets to breathe, and let the rest grow calmly in things that take longer to sell but reward your patience.

Adaeze has ₦5 million in a fixed deposit that matures in eleven months, and ₦800,000 in her savings account. When her mother is hospitalised suddenly, she cannot touch the fixed deposit without losing interest, so she uses the ₦800,000 in her savings account instead. That ₦800,000 is her liquid asset, ready the moment life asks a question she did not expect.

Questions people ask

Is money in a fixed deposit a liquid asset?

Not fully, because breaking it early usually costs you interest or attracts a penalty. It is closer to what people call near money, useful but not instantly free.

How much of my money should be liquid?

A common guide is three to six months of your expenses kept somewhere you can reach within a day or two, like a savings account or a money market fund, before you think about longer term investments.

Are shares in a company like Dangote Cement a liquid asset?

Yes, listed shares are fairly liquid because you can sell them on the stock exchange within days and receive close to their market value, unlike land or a private business stake.
