ndic

The NDIC insures your bank deposits up to a set limit, so that if your bank fails you do not lose everything.

Banks fail. Nigeria has watched it happen, and the memory of people queueing outside locked doors has not faded.

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation exists because of that memory. It insures deposits at licensed banks up to a maximum amount per depositor, per bank. If your bank collapses, the NDIC pays you up to that limit, and you are not left with nothing.

Two things about it matter and almost nobody knows either.

The limit is per depositor, per bank. So money spread across several licensed banks is insured separately at each one, and somebody holding a very large sum in a single bank is protected only up to the cap and exposed above it.

And it covers licensed institutions. Which means the investment platform promising you 30 percent, the cooperative run by a friend, and the app that is not a bank are all outside this protection entirely, whatever they imply in their advertising.

So confirm your bank is licensed, know the current limit, and if you hold more than that, think about whether it should all be sitting in one place. This is not paranoia. It is what the insurance is for.

You hold ₦40 million in a single bank. The NDIC limit protects a portion of it and the rest is exposed if the bank fails. The same ₦40 million spread across several licensed banks would be protected far more fully, for no extra cost.

Questions people ask

How much does the NDIC insure?

There is a maximum per depositor per bank, and it has been revised over time. Check the current figure with the NDIC rather than relying on an old one.

Does it cover investment platforms?

No. It covers deposits at licensed banks. Investment platforms, cooperatives and unlicensed apps sit entirely outside this protection.

What happens if my bank fails?

The NDIC steps in and pays insured depositors up to the limit. Amounts above the limit rank as claims in the liquidation, and recovery is uncertain.
