product mix

Product Mix is the full set of goods or services a business sells, and how they are grouped by variety, range, and depth to meet different customer needs.

Aunty Ngozi sells provisions at Mile 12, and for years she stocked only bags of rice, three brands, five sizes each. Business was steady but she noticed customers walking past her stall to buy detergent and seasoning cubes from the woman two stalls down, then never coming back to her that same day.

So she added beverages, detergents, tomato paste, and baby items to her stall. Suddenly the mother who came for rice also picked up Milo and Pampers, and Aunty Ngozi's average sale per customer nearly doubled. That whole basket of things she now sells, the width of categories and the depth of choices within each one, is her product mix.

A product mix has two dimensions worth knowing. Width is how many different product lines you carry, rice, drinks, detergents, snacks. Depth is how many variations exist within one line, five sizes of rice, three brands of tomato paste. A shop with wide but shallow mix carries a bit of everything but little choice in each. A shop with narrow but deep mix specialises hard in one or two lines with every size and flavour imaginable.

In the UK, think of a Nigerian food store in Peckham. Its product mix might include fresh tubers, frozen fish, spices, hair products, and phone credit top ups, because the owner knows their customer does not want to make five separate stops for one weekend shop.

Even someone sending money home is calmly making a product mix decision without calling it that. If you send ₦50,000 every month but sometimes add data bundles or pay a school fee directly, you have widened what you offer your family beyond plain cash.

Getting the mix right is not about stocking everything under the sun. It is about knowing your customer's whole need and deciding which parts of that need are worth your shelf space, your capital, and your attention.

A small pharmacy in Enugu starts with only drugs, a product mix of one line. Over time it adds baby formula, toiletries, and glucose drinks, three more lines, each with several brands and sizes. Now a customer who came for malaria tablets also buys Vaseline worth ₦800, and the pharmacy's daily sales rise by roughly ₦15,000 without spending anything on advertising.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between product mix and product line?

A product line is one category of related items, such as all the rice you sell. Product mix is the entire collection of all your lines put together, rice, drinks, detergents, and everything else on your shelves or website.

How do I know if I should widen or deepen my product mix?

Widen when customers keep asking for things you do not stock at all. Deepen when customers already buy from you but want more choice, more sizes, or more brands within what you already sell. Watch what people ask for and let that guide you, rather than guessing.

Can a small business have too wide a product mix?

Yes, and it happens often. Spreading capital across too many lines can leave you with a bit of everything and not enough of anything, plus stock that expires or goes out of fashion before it sells. It is usually wiser to master a few lines deeply before widening further.
