receipt

Receipt is the paper or digital proof that money changed hands for goods or services, and it is the calm backbone of every serious business.

Two women sell rice at the same market. One scribbles a name and amount in an old notebook, then loses the notebook when the rain soaks her stall. The other hands every customer a small printed slip, keeps her own copy, and at the end of the month knows exactly what she sold, to whom, and for how much.

That slip is the receipt, and it is more than politeness. It is proof. Proof that a transaction happened, proof of the amount, the date, and often what was bought. Without it, memory becomes the record, and memory is a terrible accountant.

In Lagos, a small business owner who sells phone accessories at Computer Village learns this the hard way when a customer disputes a payment months later. The one who kept receipts settles the argument in two minutes. The one who did not spends a whole afternoon apologising and guessing.

For someone in London sending money home to a relative starting a business in Enugu, receipts matter twice over. They prove the money was sent, and later, they prove how it was spent, which builds trust for the next transfer and the one after that.

Receipts also feed the bigger consider. Tax filings need them, loan applications ask for them, and investors doing their homework will want to see that the business actually sells what it claims to sell. A drawer full of receipts, however messy, is worth more than the most confident memory.

A tailor in Abeokuta sells a bespoke agbada for ₦85,000 and writes out a receipt showing the date, the customer's name, and the amount paid. Six months later, when the customer says he paid ₦95,000, the tailor pulls out his copy and the matter ends there.

Questions people ask

Is a receipt the same as an invoice?

No. An invoice is a request for payment sent before or at the time of a sale, while a receipt is proof that payment has already been made. One asks, the other confirms.

Do I need to give receipts for small cash sales?

It helps, even for small amounts. A simple handwritten slip with the date, item, and amount can save you from disputes and also helps you track your own sales over time.

Can a text message or bank transfer alert count as a receipt?

It can serve as informal proof of payment, especially for transfers, but a proper receipt with business details, date, and description of goods or services is stronger evidence, particularly for tax or dispute purposes.
