thrift

Thrift is the daily habit of spending less than you could, and it is unfashionable, unglamorous and the root of every fortune.

Nobody posts about thrift. There is no content in it, no photograph, no announcement. Which is exactly why it works.

Thrift is the ordinary, repeated decision to spend less than you could. Not misery. Not denial. Simply the refusal to spend money on things you do not actually want, in order to impress people you do not actually like.

It is the least respected virtue in Nigerian life and the most reliable one. Because every single naira of wealth anybody has ever built came from a gap between what arrived and what left, and thrift is the only thing that opens that gap from the spending side.

You can attack it from the income side too, and you should. But income is hard to change quickly and spending is not, which is why thrift is where most people can start today rather than next year.

The version that lasts is not extreme. Spend generously on the two or three things you genuinely love, and ruthlessly little on everything else. That is not deprivation. That is honesty about what actually makes you happy, which most people have never sat down and worked out.

Quiet, boring, unposted, and the reason some people are free at fifty.

Two colleagues earn the same. One spends on things nobody notices and nobody remembers. The other spends deliberately on two things she loves and very little else, and invests ₦150,000 a month. In fifteen years she has choices and he has stories.

Questions people ask

Is thrift the same as being stingy?

No. Stinginess is refusing to spend at all. Thrift is refusing to spend on things you do not actually value, so that you can spend fully on things you do.

Can I really build wealth on a small income?

Yes, and many have. The savings rate matters more than the salary, which is why modest earners with discipline often finish ahead of high earners without it.

Where do I start?

Track everything you spend for one month without judging it. Almost everybody finds a surprising amount going to things they did not consciously choose.
