upgrade

Upgrade is when an analyst raises their rating on a stock, from something like Hold to Buy, because they now believe it will perform better than before.

Here is a mistake many people make without even noticing. They hear that some big analyst has changed their mind about a stock, and they treat it like gospel, rushing to buy without asking why the analyst changed their mind or whether that reason even applies to them.

An upgrade, in plain terms, is when an analyst or a research firm looks at a company again and decides it deserves a better rating than they gave it last time. Maybe they had it as Hold, meaning neither buy nor sell, and now they move it to Buy, meaning they expect the price to rise. That shift is the upgrade.

It usually happens because something changed. A company that sells cement in Nigeria might report stronger profits than expected, or the government might announce a new housing programme that means more demand for building materials. An analyst who was cautious before now has a reason to be more hopeful, so they upgrade the stock and often explain their reasoning in a note that gets shared across trading desks and financial news.

In London, you will see the same thing with shares like a big supermarket chain. If fuel prices drop and analysts expect shoppers to spend more freely, an analyst might upgrade the supermarket's stock from Hold to Buy, and you will see the share price twitch upward within minutes as other investors react to the news.

The thing to remember is that an upgrade is one person's opinion, backed by research, but still an opinion. It can move a share price for a day or a week, sometimes longer, but it is not a promise. Plenty of upgraded stocks have gone on to disappoint, and plenty of downgraded ones have calmly done well. Treat it as one voice in a room full of voices, not the final word.

An analyst at a Lagos based research firm upgrades a listed bank from Hold to Buy after the bank posts a surprise ₦45,000,000,000 profit for the quarter. Shares that were trading around ₦28 each jump to ₦33 within two days as other investors follow the signal.

Questions people ask

Does an upgrade mean I should buy the stock immediately?

Not automatically. It means one analyst now feels more positive, but you should still check why, and whether that reason fits your own goals and how long you plan to hold the investment.

Who decides to upgrade a stock?

Analysts working for banks, brokerages or independent research firms. They study a company's results, its industry and the wider economy, then rate the stock based on where they expect the price to go.

Can a stock be upgraded and downgraded again soon after?

Yes, ratings shift as new information comes in. A company can be upgraded after good results, then downgraded months later if conditions change, so it pays to keep watching rather than assume the rating is permanent.
