west texas intermediate

West Texas Intermediate is a grade of crude oil used as a price benchmark, so when the news says oil prices rose or fell, this is often the number they mean.

Why does the price of petrol in Lagos seem to move because of something happening in America? That question makes more sense once you meet West Texas Intermediate, or WTI as it is usually called.

WTI is a specific type of crude oil pumped mainly from Texas and nearby parts of the United States. It is light, low in sulphur, and easy to refine into petrol, so it has become one of the two main benchmarks the whole oil trading world watches, the other being Brent crude from the North Sea.

Here is the part that matters for Nigerians. Nigeria produces its own benchmark grade, Bonny Light, but its price is set in relation to Brent, not WTI. Even so, WTI still moves the global mood. If WTI drops sharply because of an American slowdown, traders often expect Brent and Bonny Light to soften too, and that ripples into what fuel importers pay, which eventually shows up at the pump in Lagos or Port Harcourt.

Think of it like a big market where different sellers grade their pepper by quality and origin. WTI is one trusted grade that buyers use to judge fair price, even if they are actually buying a different grade from a different farm. Traders in London or New York quote WTI futures constantly, and those numbers travel through news headlines into decisions made by fuel marketers, airlines setting ticket prices, and even a Nigerian in the diaspora comparing how far their pound or dollar stretches when they send money home, since currency and oil prices often move together for oil dependent economies.

You do not need to trade oil futures to care about WTI. You just need to know that when the business news says oil prices fell today, WTI is often the exact number they are quoting.

On a given trading day, WTI crude might be quoted at 78 dollars a barrel while Brent trades at 82 dollars. A Nigerian fuel marketer watching both numbers uses that gap to estimate what importing petrol will cost in the coming weeks, and that estimate eventually shapes the price at the pump.

Questions people ask

Is West Texas Intermediate the same as the oil Nigeria sells?

No. Nigeria's main export grade is Bonny Light, which is priced against Brent crude, not WTI. WTI still influences global sentiment, but it is a different, mostly American grade of oil.

Why do WTI and Brent sometimes have very different prices?

They come from different locations with different transport costs and demand patterns. WTI is landlocked in the United States and depends on pipelines, while Brent is shipped from the sea, so supply disruptions affect them differently.

Can an ordinary Nigerian investor actually trade WTI?

Yes, through international brokers offering oil futures or contracts for difference, though this is a high risk activity best approached with money you can afford to lose and a clear understanding of how leverage works.
