zero sum game

Zero Sum Game means for one person to win, another person must lose an equal amount, so nothing new is created, only moved around.

Have you ever wondered why that WhatsApp group chat about crypto or forex trading feels less like teamwork and more like everyone calmly hoping to be the one who eats and not the one who gets eaten?

That feeling is not paranoia. Some markets and games are built so that the total gain and the total loss always add up to zero. Whatever you win, somebody else lost, exactly that much. Nothing was built, nothing grew, the money just changed pockets.

Think of a betting pool where ten people each stake ₦5,000 on a football match. The total pot is ₦50,000. If three people guess correctly, they split that ₦50,000 among themselves. The seven who lost did more than lose their prediction, they funded the winners' prize. That is a zero sum game in its purest form.

Contrast that with a proper business or a share in a growing company. When a Lagos food delivery startup earns more customers and profit, the founder gains, the staff gain through salaries, the investors gain through returns, and the customer gains a service they wanted. Everybody can win at once because value was actually created, more than shuffled.

This matters for Nigerians because a lot of get rich quick schemes disguise a zero sum game as a growth opportunity. Ponzi arrangements, some multi level marketing setups, and pure speculation without any real underlying value all tend to be zero sum, or worse, negative sum once fees are taken out.

A relative abroad sending money home into a family contribution scheme should ask one honest question before joining: is this pot growing because real value is being added, or is my gain simply going to come out of someone else's pocket?

A group of five friends in Abuja each put ₦20,000 into a raffle for a phone worth ₦100,000. One person wins the phone, the other four lose their ₦20,000 outright. Total money in equals total value out, nobody created anything new, it only moved.

Questions people ask

Is the stock market a zero sum game?

Not usually. When companies grow profits and pay dividends over time, real value is created and many investors can gain together. Short term speculative trading between two people on the same stock can behave like a zero sum game, but long term investing in productive businesses is not.

How do I spot a zero sum scheme before I join?

Ask where the profit actually comes from. If the answer is mainly new members' money rather than real sales, services, or growing assets, you are likely looking at a zero sum or negative sum setup dressed up as an opportunity.

Can a zero sum game ever be fair?

Yes, fairness and zero sum are not opposites. A simple raffle or a friendly betting pool can be perfectly fair as long as everyone understands the rules and enters with eyes open, knowing someone must lose for another to win.
