Startup accelerators for Nigerian founders: six programmes and how to assess them

Research six startup programmes through official sources, distinguish open and closed cohorts, and prepare an evidence-led application that fits your business.

5 min read

Two Nigerian founders reviewing their plans together beside a Moneywise headline about finding business support.

A founder can spend months improving a pitch deck while the business still needs something more specific: a working prototype, access to customers, technical guidance or enough time to test whether people will pay. The right accelerator can help with those needs, but a large funding headline does not establish that a programme fits your company.

This guide originally listed six programmes with June and July 2026 deadlines. Those dates have passed. The revised guide keeps the useful research routes while distinguishing an open application from a programme worth watching for a future cohort.

Checked on 24 October 2026: use the official pages below for current status. This is a programme research guide, not a claim that all six opportunities are open or that any applicant is guaranteed funding.

Start with the help your business needs

Write down your biggest obstacle for the next three months. A hardware founder who needs laboratory access may benefit from a different programme from a software founder seeking distribution. A founder without a clear idea may need a different environment from a company already serving paying customers.

Then compare sector, stage, location, team commitment, cash, non-cash support and investment terms. Credits for software or services are not the same as money that can pay staff. Equity funding involves ownership; a grant and a convertible agreement carry different conditions.

1. Katapult Africa

Katapult Africa’s official programme page focuses on climate technology and sustainable agriculture and describes a three-month programme. It displayed an application invitation when checked. Confirm the cohort, eligibility, investment terms and deadline directly before preparing an application.

A founder working on storage, farm productivity or another relevant problem should explain the customer, how the solution works and what has been tested. Avoid stretching a business into a climate category without evidence of the connection.

2. Google for Startups Accelerator: Africa

The official Africa accelerator page describes a three-month hybrid programme for growth-stage technology startups. Its listed 2026 application deadline was 18 March, with the programme ending in June. Those dates do not establish an open October intake.

Use the page and Google’s programme directory to check for relevant future opportunities. Explain the technical challenge you need help solving; do not assume access to a programme means a cash investment or automatic product credits.

3. The Bridge

The Bridge’s official site describes an eight-week San Francisco residency for non-US founders, including people at an early stage. The site advertises potential investment for selected teams. Confirm the current intake, selection, travel and funding terms; the older June deadline in this article should not be reused.

If relocation is involved, establish who pays for travel and living costs, what immigration permission is needed and whether your household can support the time away. An application invitation does not guarantee a visa or investment.

4. mHUB Energy Tech Accelerator

The mHUB Energy Tech page states that applications for its October 2026 Compute-Energy Nexus cohort are closed. It provides an update route for future application periods. This is a programme to monitor, rather than an open call in this guide.

Its published $200,000 package includes cash, reimbursement and in-kind services in exchange for equity. Read the breakdown rather than budgeting as though the whole figure will arrive as unrestricted cash. Assess whether facilities and specialist support solve a real need for your product.

5. Accelerate Africa

Future Africa’s official description of Accelerate Africa explains support for early-stage African founders, including storytelling, team development, product development and fundraising. It does not by itself verify a currently open application window.

Use Future Africa’s official communications to identify the next valid call and its terms. A past announcement about a programme is useful background, but it is not evidence that a deadline or investment offer remains available today.

6. Y Combinator

The official YC application page is accepting applications for its Winter 2027 batch in San Francisco. It lists an on-time deadline of 2 November at 8pm Pacific Time. On that date this is 5am WAT on 3 November 2026, so a Nigerian founder should plan for the earlier evening rather than leave it until the local calendar date.

Read the current application guidance and investment terms directly, including the requirements of in-person participation. Selection is competitive. Clear evidence of the problem, what you have built and what customers do is more useful than copying a fashionable story.

Prepare one honest evidence pack

Keep a concise company description, founder roles, ownership details, a working demonstration where relevant, customer evidence and current financial records. Distinguish registered users from active users and revenue from profit. Label forecasts as forecasts.

For an illustrative example, “12 paying shops reordered this month” is clearer than “we are transforming African retail”. Explain what you learned from customers who did not return as well as those who did. Specific evidence helps a reader assess your decisions.

Use our MoveNow funding application guide for another example of checking eligibility and presenting a realistic project budget. Its conditions differ from accelerator investment, so read each provider’s own rules.

Choose a useful application over a rushed collection

Shortlist the programmes that fit, record their current status and assign a realistic preparation deadline. If a crucial term is unclear, ask the organiser through its official route. Keep serving customers while you apply, because the business still needs to progress whether the answer is yes or no.

Updated on 24 October 2026. Expired deadlines and the earlier combined funding headline have been removed. Programme status can change; confirm current eligibility, timing and terms on each official page.
