Anthropic Fellows paid AI safety research opportunity

If you can write Python and you care about where AI is heading, the Anthropic Fellows programme deserves a careful look. It pays you to spend four months on safety research, with an experienced researcher beside you. There is no PhD requirement, and the money is not pocket change.

However, one thing first, so nobody wastes an evening on it. You must already be living and allowed to work in the UK, the US or Canada. If you are reading this from Lagos or Abuja without that status, this particular door is not open yet.

At a glance

  • What you get: a weekly stipend of US$3,850, £2,310 or CA$4,300, plus benefits that vary by country, and a research mentor.
  • Who qualifies: people authorised to work in, and living in, the UK, the US or Canada. Anthropic is not sponsoring visas.
  • Deadline: 30 October. The listing gives no year and no closing time, and it is open now for the January cohort, so treat it as 30 October 2026 and send it early in the day.
  • Duration: four months full time, roughly 40 hours a week, with a possible extension.
  • Working arrangements: shared workspaces in Berkeley or London, or remote within the UK, US or Canada.
  • Fee: none.

Who can apply for Anthropic Fellows?

First, you need fluent Python and full time availability. You also need a solid technical background in computer science, mathematics or physics. However, a PhD is not on the list. Anthropic says plainly that its usual minimum education requirements do not apply here, so a strong self taught engineer can compete.

For the diaspora, this is the detail that matters most. Your right to work must already be in place, because Anthropic is not sponsoring visas for fellows this round.

What you could gain

Beyond the stipend, Anthropic Fellows gives you mentorship from people who do this work daily. You also get funding for compute and research expenses of roughly US$15,000 a month. Be clear about that figure, though: it pays for the research, not for you. After selection, fellows go through project selection and mentor matching.

How to apply

  1. Read the role description on Anthropic’s careers listing.
  2. Complete the Constellation application form. Constellation is Anthropic’s recruiting partner for the programme.
  3. Then prepare for a reference check, technical assessments and interviews, and a research discussion.

Here is the trap. Submitting the Greenhouse job form is not the application. The listing says clearly that the Constellation form is the one that counts, so do not stop at the job board.

Before you apply

So pick one project you can explain in plain words: what you tried, what you learned, and what you would test next. In fact, clear thinking about one small piece of work reads far better than a broad statement of interest. Selection is competitive, and neither published research nor a job at Anthropic afterwards is promised.
