Above Par

Definition

When a financial instrument, like a bond or share, is trading at a price higher than its original face value — see Par Value for the full explanation.

Example

Example 1: A Nigerian government bond with a face value of ₦1,000 is trading at ₦1,150 on the market, it is selling above par, meaning investors are willing to pay more than its original value. Example 2: A UK government gilt originally issued at £100 is now trading at £110 on the London Stock Exchange, it is priced above par because demand for it has pushed its market value higher than its face value.
