fund family

Fund Family is a group of mutual funds run by the same company, so you can move your money between them without leaving the house.

Two people are shopping for the same thing in different ways. The first person walks into one shop for rice, another for beans, another for oil, and pays a separate fare each time. The second person walks into one big supermarket and picks everything under one roof, one till, one receipt.

A fund family works like that supermarket. It is one company, say a bank or an asset management firm, that runs several mutual funds under its name. One fund might hold only government bonds, another might hold shares of big Nigerian companies, another might mix both. They all belong to the same house.

The beauty of staying inside one family is how easily you can move between rooms. If you put money in a money market fund with a company and later decide you want more growth, you can often switch into their equity fund with a phone call or a few taps, sometimes with little or no extra cost, because you are still their customer.

Think of someone in Lagos who started with ₦200,000 in a money market fund because they wanted safety while saving for rent. A year later, rent is sorted and they want their money to grow faster for a longer goal, so they switch into the same company's equity fund without withdrawing and starting a fresh relationship elsewhere.

For a Nigerian in Manchester sending money home, this matters too. If their family's chosen provider back in Nigeria offers a fund family, one relationship can serve different goals over time, school fees now, a small business later, without shopping for a new manager each time life changes.

Chidinma has ₦500,000 in a money market fund run by a fund family. When she wants higher growth, she switches ₦300,000 into the same family's equity fund through her online portal, no new paperwork with a different company required.

Questions people ask

Is a fund family the same as a single mutual fund?

No. A single mutual fund is one pool of money with one strategy. A fund family is the company behind several different funds, each with its own strategy, all under one roof.

Does switching funds within a family cost money?

Sometimes it is free or cheap since you stay with the same company, but always check the fine print, because some funds still charge a small fee or have conditions on how often you can switch.

Why would I choose a fund family instead of picking funds from different companies?

Convenience and simplicity mostly. One login, one relationship manager, one set of statements, and often easier switching as your goals change through life.
