asset management company

Asset Management Company is a licensed firm that invests people's money in stocks, bonds and other assets on their behalf, in exchange for a fee.

Think of the money you and your neighbours in the estate contribute to hire one trusted person to plant and manage a big shared farm, rather than each of you planting a small useless patch alone. That trusted farmer is what an asset management company does with money, except the crop is stocks, bonds, treasury bills and property, and the harvest is returns paid back to everyone who contributed.

In Nigeria, companies like Stanbic IBTC Asset Management, ARM Investment Managers or FBNQuest Asset Management take contributions from ordinary savers, sometimes as small as ₦5,000 a month through a mutual fund, and pool that money with thousands of other people's naira. With that bigger pool, they buy a spread of investments that a single small saver could never access or properly research alone, then they charge a management fee for doing the careful work of choosing, watching and adjusting those investments.

In the United Kingdom, a similar role is played by firms like Legal & General Investment Management or Fidelity International, who manage pensions and ISAs for millions of ordinary workers, calmly making decisions about where that money sits so the saver does not have to become a stock market expert overnight.

The real value of an asset management company is that it brings discipline, research and diversification to people who have busy lives, families to feed and jobs to do, and simply do not have hours every day to study company balance sheets or bond yields.

You are not handing over your money and hoping for the best. You are hiring expertise, the same way you would hire a good accountant instead of trying to do complicated tax returns yourself at midnight.

Adaeze puts ₦20,000 every month into a mutual fund run by an asset management company. Over five years, her contributions plus the returns the company earns from investing in government bonds and blue chip stocks grow to over ₦1,600,000, far more than if the same cash had sat calmly in a regular savings account.

Questions people ask

Is an asset management company the same as a bank?

No. A bank mainly takes deposits and gives loans, while an asset management company invests your money in things like stocks and bonds to grow it, usually charging a management fee rather than paying a fixed interest rate.

How do I know if an asset management company in Nigeria is legitimate?

Check that it is registered and licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission, and look for a track record you can verify, rather than relying on promises of quick, unusually high returns.

What happens if the asset management company loses money?

Since your money is invested in the market, its value can go down as well as up, and you carry that risk as the investor, which is why it matters to understand what the fund actually invests in before you commit.
