transaction
Transaction means any exchange of money or value between two parties, from buying pure water to sending ₦500,000 abroad, and every one leaves a trace.
In plain English
Check your phone right now and count how many alerts you got today. That beep from your bank, the one that makes you flinch a little before you open it, that is your bank telling you a transaction just happened. You bought recharge card, you paid for jollof rice at the buka, you sent your cousin ₦10,000 for her exam fees. Each of those is a transaction, and Nigerians probably do more of these in a single day than they realise, because life itself is one long string of exchanges.
A transaction, in plain terms, is any event where money or value moves from one party to another, and something is given in return. It could be goods, it could be a service, it could just be a transfer with nothing physical changing hands. The word covers a huge range, from a market woman collecting cash for tomatoes to a company in Lagos wiring millions to a supplier in China.
What makes something a proper transaction is that both sides agree to it and there is a record, even if that record is just a receipt scribbled on paper or a debit alert on your phone. This record matters more than people think. It is what your bank checks when you dispute a charge, what your accountant uses at year end, and what protects you if someone tries to claim you never paid.
Think about the diaspora angle for a second. A Nigerian nurse in Manchester sends ₦300,000 worth of pounds home every month through a transfer app. That single tap on her phone sets off a transaction, or really a chain of them: her account debited in the UK, an exchange happening somewhere in the middle, and her mother's account credited in Naira in Lagos. Three or four transactions working together to feel like one simple act of love.
Even the free things sometimes count. If your friend transfers you ₦2,000 with no expectation of repayment, some systems will still log it as a transaction because value moved, even though no goods or service came back the other way.
You transfer ₦45,000 to your landlord for rent through your banking app. The moment that money leaves your account and lands in his, that single event, complete with a reference number and a timestamp, is one transaction.
Questions people ask
Is a failed transfer still called a transaction?
Banks usually log it as a failed or reversed transaction rather than leaving it unrecorded, because the attempt itself still needs a trail for your protection and theirs.
Why do some transactions show as pending for hours?
Pending usually means the money has left your account but the receiving bank has not confirmed it yet, often because of network delays or checks the system runs before final settlement.
Can a transaction be cancelled after it goes through?
Once it is fully settled, it generally cannot be undone on its own, but you can reverse the effect through a refund or a new transaction that moves the money back.
