Nigeria’s 2026 tax reliefs: what to check on your payslip and records
A practical guide to selected 2026 tax reliefs, showing what a deduction means and how to check your own figures without assuming everyone is exempt.
You look at your payslip, see a tax deduction and wonder whether the new rules should have changed it. Someone online says every person earning below a particular salary is exempt. Another says your landlord’s receipt will get you a cash refund. Before long, a policy meant to help people has become another confusing money conversation.
The useful place to begin is your own calculation. What is your income, which deductions apply, and how was the remaining taxable amount assessed? This guide summarises selected reliefs and practical checks, reviewed against official sources on 24 October 2026. The full official list is linked below.
Start with taxable income rather than a viral salary threshold
The Nigeria Tax Act 2025 sets a 0% band for the first ₦800,000 of annual taxable income. Taxable income is the amount reached after the relevant deductions and exemptions, rather than automatically the same as your gross salary.
The next ₦2.2 million of taxable income is taxed at 15%, with higher bands applying as income rises. A person’s entire income does not suddenly move into a higher rate because they cross a band. Your payroll calculation needs to establish the correct taxable amount first.
For a simple illustration, suppose the final annual taxable income, after all applicable deductions, is ₦2.4 million. The first ₦800,000 attracts no tax and the remaining ₦1.6 million attracts ₦240,000 at 15%. That is an average of ₦20,000 a month. This is an example using taxable income, not a calculation for everyone with a ₦200,000 monthly gross salary.
Understand what rent relief actually does
The Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee’s official summary of 50 exemptions and reliefs describes rent relief as 20% of annual rent, capped at ₦500,000. It is a deduction in the income tax calculation, subject to the applicable requirements.
If annual rent is ₦600,000, 20% is ₦120,000. That does not mean you automatically receive ₦120,000 from the government or pay ₦120,000 less tax. It means an eligible deduction reduces the income on which tax is calculated. The actual tax effect depends on your circumstances and applicable bands.
Keep the tenancy documentation, payment evidence and any details required by payroll or the relevant tax authority. Ask how to submit the claim and how it will appear in the calculation. Do not alter a receipt or claim rent that was not paid.
Check the other deductions that apply to you
The committee’s summary identifies eligible pension, health insurance and housing fund contributions, certain owner-occupied housing loan interest, and life insurance or annuity premiums among the individual deductions and reliefs. Each has its own conditions. Listing an expense in a budget does not make it tax-deductible.
Request a clear annual computation from payroll and compare it with your contribution records. Use the official Joint Revenue Board PAYE calculator as a checking resource, entering accurate figures. A calculator is most useful when you understand its inputs and the year it covers.
Business reliefs need a separate assessment
A sole trader and a limited company are not interchangeable for tax purposes. A small company exemption depends on the legal definition and conditions, rather than the everyday meaning of “small business.” Business registration alone does not make every activity or tax disappear.
Use the official gazetted laws resource and current guidance from the relevant authority to check the rule for your entity and activity. A qualified tax practitioner can help with company thresholds, VAT, cross-border income or an unusual transaction.
Turn the information into a useful review
Collect your payslips, annual income statement, rent evidence and relevant contribution records. Ask which exemptions or deductions were applied, which were excluded and why. If a figure appears wrong, request the correction process rather than assuming a social media example overrides the computation.
If the review leaves you with more take-home pay, decide how it can help your household. It might reduce expensive debt, cover an overdue bill or support a reserve. The Moneywise salary budgeting guide can help you give it a purpose.
