outsourcing

Outsourcing is when a business pays another company or person to handle a task instead of doing it in house, usually to save money, time, or stress.

Should you hire someone full time to do this, or should you just pay a person outside to handle it and free your hands for what actually grows the business? That question sits behind almost every outsourcing decision, and most small business owners in Nigeria answer it without even knowing there is a name for it.

Say you run a small skincare brand in Lagos. You are good at mixing products and building a following on Instagram, but you hate bookkeeping and you are terrible at it. Instead of hiring a full time accountant on salary, you pay a freelance accountant ₦25,000 a month to sort your books. That is outsourcing. You are not building that skill inside your business, you are borrowing it from someone who already has it.

Companies do this at a much bigger scale. A bank in Lagos might outsource its customer call centre to a company in another state, or even another country, because it is cheaper and the specialist company already has the training and the systems in place. A UK company might outsource its IT support to a firm in India for the same reason, the skill exists elsewhere and it is often cheaper to rent it than to build it from scratch.

There is a diaspora version of this too. A Nigerian running a small online shop from London might outsource product sourcing and packaging to a team back in Lagos, paying them in naira while she focuses on marketing to customers in the UK. The work gets split across two countries, and both sides earn from the arrangement.

The catch is that outsourcing only works well when you are clear about what you are giving away. You keep control of the strategy and the relationship with your customer, but you hand over the doing. Get that balance wrong, and you can end up outsourcing the very thing that made your business special in the first place.

A small logistics startup in Abuja outsources its app development to a software team instead of hiring in house developers. The team charges ₦800,000 for the project, delivered in six weeks, which is far cheaper and faster than hiring three full time staff who would need salaries, laptops, and pension contributions every single month.

Questions people ask

Is outsourcing the same as hiring a freelancer?

They overlap a lot. Hiring a freelancer for a single task is a common form of outsourcing. The word outsourcing is just the bigger idea, it can mean one freelancer or an entire company handling a whole department for you.

Is outsourcing bad for local jobs?

It can move jobs around rather than create or destroy them outright. A Lagos company outsourcing to another Nigerian city still keeps the work and the money inside the country, while outsourcing abroad can mean money leaving Nigeria, so where you outsource to matters as much as whether you outsource at all.

How do I know what to outsource in my business?

Start with tasks that eat your time but are not your special skill. If bookkeeping, deliveries, or customer replies are dragging you down and someone else can do them just as well or better, that is usually a good candidate to hand over.
